The toiyaku was an official of the Ryûkyû Kingdom charged with handling communications with Japanese and other foreign ships at Naha Harbor. The toiyaku also handled the distribution of goods provided to the kingdom's government by Japanese merchants and officials. The position was filled from among the scholar-aristocracy of Naha, and rotated on a yearly basis.
