He was a Bitchu Matsuyama han samurai. His kenjutsu style was Jikishin Ryu and Shin-Kage Ryu. It's unknown when he joined the Shinsengumi but his name was on the list of the Ikedaya bonus conferment. While he was stationed in Osaka with his brother Tani Mantaro, they raided on Zenzaiya 1865. In 1866, he was found dead near Yasaka shrine (Kyoto). His grave is in Koen-ji.
His youngest brother Tani Shuhei was adopted to Kondo Isami temporarily.
