He was Bitchu Matsuyama han samurai. Kenjutsu was Jikishin Ryu and Shin-Kage Ryu. It's unknown when he joined Shinsengumi but his name was on the list of Ikedaya bonus conferment. While he stationed in Osaka with his brother Tani Mantaro, they raided on Zenzaiya 1865. In 1866, he was found dead near Yasaka shrine (Kyoto). His grave is in Koen-ji.
