Taira no Sukemori was a son of Taira no Shigemori and grandson of Taira no Kiyomori who fought in the Genpei War and is believed to have died in the Battle of Dan no ura in 1185.
According to local legends on the island of Amami Ôshima, Sukemori did not die in the battle, however, but instead fled to Amami along with his compatriots Taira no Arimori and Taira no Yukimori. The three "invaded" or attacked the island and set up fortresses in three different parts of the island; while Arimori and Yukimori are said to have established fortresses on the mainland of Amami Ôshima, Sukemori is said to have established his in an area known as Shodon 諸鈍 on the neighboring island of Kakeroma-jima.
