The Numata of [[Kozuke province|Kôzuke province]] were descended from the [[Miura clan|Miura family]]. During the middle of the [[Sengoku Period]] they allied with [[Uesugi Kenshin]] of [[Echigo province|Echigo]], and many of the latter's raids into the [[Kanto]] would be staged from [[Numata castle]]. In [[1569]] a succession issue created turmoil within the family, and years later they would be destroyed by [[Sanada Masayuki]] after the latter had [[Numata Kageyoshi]] murdered.
