Nagasumi was a son of [[Niiro Yasuhisa]]. He entered the priesthood and adopted the name [[Ryoan]], traveling as far as Kyoto at the age of 16 in his pursuit of learning. On his return he became the head priest of a [[yashiro]] ([[Shinto]] temple). In [[1587]] he returned to secular life at the order of [[Shimazu Yoshihisa]] and served [[Shimazu Yoshihiro|Yoshihiro]] in the [[Korean Campaigns]] and at the [[Battle of Sekigahara]].
