Kyoto University, often known as ''Kyôdai'' for short and originally established as Kyoto Imperial University (''Kyôto teikoku daigaku''), was the second modern university established in Japan.

A number of buildings on campus survive from early decades, and have been given various "Historic Building" designations. One such structure is the Bungakubu Chinretsukan, or Department of Literature Exhibition Hall, built in [[1911]]. Still actively used today, albeit with considerable interior renovations, the Chinretsukan was long the chief center of historical studies on campus, housing numerous professors' offices and storerooms of historical documents. Many of these documents and artifacts have now been moved to the University Museum next door.
