  • Japanese: 公方 (kubou, oyakekata)

Kubô, an abbreviation of kuge no kata (公家の方, lit. "people of the noble houses") was originally a term used to refer to the Emperor and the members of the Imperial Court. In the Kamakura through Edo Periods, it was appropriated as a term to refer to the Shogun, implying his status as a deputy to the Emperor, and through that Imperial connection, the legitimacy of his power. During the Muromachi Period, the term also came to refer to the shogun's chief deputies assigned to administer certain regions (see Kantô kubô, aka Kamakura kubô).
