She was the daughter of [[Shimazu Shigehide]], lord of [[Satsuma han]]. In [[1776]], at the age of 4, she was engaged to Matsudaira Toyochiyo of the [[Hitotsubashi family]], who would later become Tokugawa Ienari. He became shogun in [[1787]], and they were married two years later. She gave birth to her first child, Atsunosuke, in [[1797]], but he died when he was only age 4.
