Iesato joined the Roshigumi with Negishi Yuzan in 1863 and remained in Kyoto with the other 23 members. After the Roshigumi returned to Edo, he and Tonouchi Yoshio were ordered to be in charge of this party by Udono Kyuo. However Tonouchi was assassinated during the ensuing internal strife. Iesato ran away to Osaka but was found by Serizawa Kamo and he was forced to commit Seppuku.
