The temple was later the site of a notable meeting between [[Yamauchi Yodo|Yamauchi Yôdô]] and [[Katsu Kaishu|Katsu Kaishû]], and further boasts a statue of [[Sakamoto Ryoma|Sakamoto Ryôma]], who stayed there for a time while on the run.
[[Okichi]], a geisha or servant associated with [[Townsend Harris]], is buried at Hôfuku-ji.
