- Chinese/Japanese: 翰林院 (Hànlín yuàn / kanrin'in)
The Hanlin Academy refers to the scholar-officials in service to the Chinese Imperial court.
The Academy was first established in 738 by Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, and remained dominant in the Song, Ming, and Qing Dynasties.
Scholars were appointed to the Academy through the Chinese imperial examinations system.
