Genpuku

  • Japanese: 元服 (genpuku)

Genpuku was the traditional coming-of-age ceremony for members of the samurai class.

It marked the transition of a boy (or "youth", wakashû) into being considered an adult man in broader society. The genpuku ceremony chiefly involved a change of clothes and hairstyle, and in certain periods, the young man would receive his first eboshi court cap, sword, and suit of armor.[1]
