The population of the province as a whole, at its [[Edo period]] peak in [[1718]], was around 372,000. Following the [[1732]] [[Kyoho famine|Kyôho famine]], the population stabilized around 307,000, and then stagnated. Only around 1800 did the population begin to recover, reaching pre-famine levels by the 1860s.
