Zen monks based in Ryûkyû, due to their strong connections to Japan (chiefly [[Satsuma province|Satsuma]]), then came to occupy a particularly prominent role in Ryûkyû's diplomatic interactions with Japan, both in drafting formal communications, and in serving as official royal envoys.
