The Arakawa occupied the area of the same name in northern Echigo province. They served the Nagao and later, Uesugi Kenshin. Arakawa Izu no Kami Nagazane fought at the Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima (1561) and Arakawa Yajirô was also noted for his service to the Uesugi clan.
