  • Emperor Xuanzong II of Tang takes the throne in China. He lifts the ban on Buddhism imposed some years before, and orders the construction and reconstruction of numerous temples; bans on Nestorian Christianity and Zoroastrianism remain in place.
  • Ennin returns from China.
  • Zhang Yanyuan completes the lìdài mínghuà jì (歷代名畫記), oft-cited as the first history of art ever written.
