1886/1/28 A formal Convention of Japanese Immigration is signed with Hawaii, retroactively covering the immigrants who traveled to Hawaii the previous year.

Andô Tarô arrives in Honolulu as the first Japanese Consul General in Hawaii.
Bunkio Matsuki leaves for China.
Three prefectures are combined to form Hokkaidô-chô, or "The Department of Hokkaidô."
Ichikawa Danjûrô IX revives the kabuki dance-drama Sagi Musume ("Heron Maiden"), with a quick change element as the heron changes back into a young woman.
