Keian 4 (慶安四年)

1651/1/19 Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu invites Nakamura Kanzaburô I to Edo castle.
1651/7/9 Matsudaira Sadamasa returns his territory to Bakufu.
1651/7 The Keian Uprising, a scheme to overthrow the shogunate, fails.
1651/8/18 Ten-year-old Tokugawa Ietsuna becomes shogun; Hoshina Masayuki is named his chief advisor.

A gate of the Kyoto Imperial Palace is donated to Hirano Shrine.
Ôkura Toraaki writes his Waranbegusa.
The shogunate begins allowing daimyô to engage in deathbed adoptions, thus dramatically enhancing the stability of the patrimony (inheritance) of domains and greatly reducing the number of attainders.
Xie Bizhen comes to Ryûkyû, and demands the return of the royal seal granted the kingdom by the Ming Dynasty.

Yui Shôsetsu (b. 1605), leader of the Keian Uprising, commits seppuku.
