Sanemoto was the 3rd son of [[Date Tanemune]] and supported [[Date Terumune]] in his campaigns. He was to be adopted by [[Uesugi Sadazane]] but resistance to this within both the [[Date clan|Date]] and [[Uesugi clan|Uesugi]] houses not only caused the proposed union to be scrapped but triggered internal strife within the Date clan (the so-called [[Tenbun no ran]]). Sanemoto afterwards went on to be a valued retainer of his brother [[Date Harumune|Harumune]] and nephew [[Date Terumune|Terumune]].
