Antonio Fontanesi was an Italian oil painter who taught painting at the [[Technical Art School]] (''kôbu bijutsu gakkô'') in Tokyo beginning in [[1876]]. He had a significant impact on the early development of ''[[yoga|yôga]]'' (Western-style painting) in Japan, teaching students such as [[Yamamoto Hosui|Yamamoto Hôsui]].
He taught in the academic style standard in much of Europe at the time, focusing on anatomy and geometry, and on drawing from life or from plaster models.
