Gottfried Wagener was an ''[[oyatoi gaikokujin]]'' hired by the [[Meiji government]] to help train and otherwise prepare Japanese artisans for participation in [[World's Fairs]].
He accompanied a group of some twenty Japanese artisans to the [[1873 Vienna World's Fair]], and then returned to Japan, where he helped artisans prepare for the [[Centennial Exposition|1876 Philadelphia World's Fair]], and for Domestic Industrial Expositions in [[1877]] and [[1881]].
