Hidekane was the 9th and last son of [[Mori Motonari|Môri Motonari]] (and one of seven to reach adulthood). He was adopted as child by [[Ota Hidetsuna]] and was later brought to [[Kyoto]] by [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi]] and allowed to use the name “Toyotomi”. He served in the [[Kyushu Campaign]] and was afterwards given a large fief in [[Chikugo province|Chikugo]] at Kurume. During the [[Battle of Sekigahara|Sekigahara Campaign]] he commanded troops for the 'western army' and fought under [[Tachibaba Muneshige]] at [[Otsu castle|Ôtsu castle]].
