Gokyôjô is a text written in 1732 by Sai On, one of the Sanshikan, the three chief royal advisors in the Ryûkyû Kingdom. It declares basic understandings and practices for the kingdom and its people as they continue under the rule of Satsuma han, touching upon national laws, norms of everyday life, moral principles, manners and customs, ceremonial dress, and the like. The text was written in a form intended to be relatively accessible to all people of the kingdom, and to be spread widely, as something the people could read and work to implement or adhere to in their lives.
