Akishige was a retainer of the Uesugi clan and served under the command of [[Saito Tomonobu|Saitô Tomonobu]]. At the [[Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima]] ([[1561]]) Akishige fought gallantly and bested a Takeda hero named [[Yasuma Hiroshige]] in one-on-one combat. He was personally rewarded afterwards by [[Uesugi Kenshin]].
