Chinen Sekkô was a prominent figure in the development of Okinawan classical music.

A student of [[Yakabi Choki|Yakabi Chôki]], Chinen expanded on Yakabi's work on musical notation, creating an early form of the ''[[kunkunshi]]'' that remains today the standard form of ''[[sanshin]]'' tablature.
