Niiro Nagazumi was a son of [[Niiro Yasuhisa]]. He entered the priesthood and adopted the name Ryoan, traveling as far as Kyoto at the age of 16 in his pursuit of learning. On his return he became the head priest of a ''[[yashiro]]'' ([[Shinto]] temple). In [[1587]] he returned to secular life at the order of [[Shimazu Yoshihisa]] and served [[Shimazu Yoshihiro|Yoshihiro]] in the [[Korean Campaigns]] and at the [[Battle of Sekigahara]].
