Hisatsune in particular helped oversee the construction of stone walls at Hakozaki (in [[Hakata]]/[[Fukuoka]]), and fought in the defense against the second [[Mongol invasions|Mongol Invasion]] in [[1281]]. His forces are depicted in the famous ''[[Moko Shurai Ekotoba|Môko shûrai ekotoba]]'' ("Mongol Invasions Scroll").

Hisatsune died at Hakozaki in [[1284]], at the age of 60. He was succeeded as head of the clan by his son [[Shimazu Tadamune]]. His other son, [[Shimazu Hisanaga]], went on to found the Izaku clan.
