The Saya kaidô, or Saya highway, was a short detour from the [[Tokaido|Tôkaidô]]. It connected the Tôkaidô [[post-stations]] of [[Miya-juku]] and [[Kuwana-juku]] via a shorter boat trip than the more typical, but more dangerous, journey via Shichiri-no-watashi.
Both [[Shogun]] [[Tokugawa Iemochi]] and the [[Meiji Emperor]] are among those who employed this shortcut.
