The Enryaku-Ji Temple located on Mt. Hiei in Omi was founded by the founder of the Tendai Lotus sect of Buddhism, [[Saicho|Saichô]], in 805. The complex on Mt. Hiei grew steadily in power and influence until it was struck down by Oda Nobunaga in 1571.
