Toba Sôjô was a monk of the Heian period, to whom the creation of the famous Chôjû-giga ("Frolicking Animals") scroll painting has traditionally been attributed.
Collections of illustrations published in the Edo period and said to resemble the artistic style of the Chôjû-giga were called Toba-e, after him.
