Gen'i was a Buddhist priest for Mt. Hiei who entered the service of the [[Oda clan|Oda]] sometime before [[1570]] and was named his deputy for Kyoto in [[1582]]. After [[Oda Nobunaga|Nobunaga's]] death he served [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi|Hideyoshi]] and received a 50,000 koku fief at Takamai in [[Tamba province]] and was tasked with laying the groundwork for [[Fushimi castle]] in [[1592]]. He was named one of the Five Bugyô (magistrates) by Hideyoshi before the latter's death.
