Yoritsuna was a younger brother of [[Sanada Yukitaka]] and was at first known as Gennosuke. Noted for his bravery, he first served the [[Takeda clan|Takeda]] and when his nephew [[Sanada Masayuki|Masayuki]] drew away from that family, Yoritsuna became an important [[Sanada clan|Sanada]] retainer. He was given the care of [[Numata Castle]] in 1580 and later defended it against the [[Go-Hojo clan|Hôjô clan]]. His son [[Yasawa Yorisada|Yorisada]] went on to serve the [[Tokugawa clan|Tokugawa]] and was present in the efforts to bring down [[Osaka Campaign|Osaka Castle]] (1614-1615).
