Shigenaga was a son of [[Neshima Kiyotoshi]]. He was the 16th head of his family and was at first a retainer of the [[Kimotsuki clan|Kimotsuki]] of [[Osumi province|Ôsumi]] (Shigenaga's [[Neshima castle]] being located in that province). He later became a retainer of [[Shimazu Yoshihisa]] and was an active in various economic development projects.
