The Menju were from [[Owari province]]. Their exact origins and early course are unclear, though they claimed descent from [[Minamoto Yorimitsu]]. During the [[Sengoku period]] they came to serve the [[Shibata clan|Shibata]], an [[Oda clan|Oda]] retainer family. After the Shibata were destroyed in [[1583]] by [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi]], the Menju ended up in the service of the Owari [[Tokugawa clan|Tokugawa]] house.
