Harumoto was a son of [[Kitabatake Murachika]]. He supported [[Ashikaga Yoshiharu]] and was allowed to change his name to Harutomo as a result. Harumoto also sent troops to assist the [[Rokkaku clan]] fight the [[Kyogoku clan|Kyôgoku family]] while suppressing the [[Nagano clan|Nagano family]] within his own domain. He was also known for his interest in cultural pursuits, which he shared with his father-in-law, [[Hosokawa Takakuni]].
