When the Chôsokabe were in the process of being defeated in turn by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1585, Michiyasu gave his allegiance to the latter. He was confirmed in a 12,000-koku fief in Iyo province (Kuroshima) and went on to serve as a naval commander for Hideyoshi. He commanded ships in the Odawara (1590) and Korean Campaigns and fought in a number of naval contests with the Korean Admiral Yi Sun Shin. He was defeated and killed by Yi in the Battle of Myongyang (1597).
