When Uchino Shigeoki became a lay priest he took the name "Gassan Seiko-koji" (月山清光居士).  The naginata used by Gassan Ryu has a hook in place of the guard (''tsuba'').<ref>This naginata was considered a "man's naginata" according to ''Bugei Ryuha Daijiten''</ref>  Uchino Shigeoki died in [[Hyuga]], Takanabe-han, on the 15th day of the 9th month of the 7th year of Bunka (1810).
