Narabayashi Soken

Narabayashi Sôken was a court physician in service to Saga han. In 1850, he used Western medical techniques to implement a smallpox vaccine. Seeing the success of this method, lord Nabeshima Narimasa had vaccines administered widely throughout the domain.
