He left the Shinsengumi after the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma and joined the Seikyotai but surrendered to Satsuma han. He became wealthy merchant in Hokkaido after the Meiji Restration. In 1892, while exploring Etorofu island, he fell off from a bridge then the rifle he had went off accidentally and he was killed.
