Photograph of a building of the Enryaku-ji complex on Mt. Hiei.

The Enryaku-Ji Temple located on Mt. Hiei in Omi was founded by the founder of the Tendai Lotus sect of Buddhism, Saichô, in 805. The complex on Mt. Hiei grew steadily in power and influence until it was struck down by Oda Nobunaga in 1571.
