Masakage was the second son of Ôta Sukemasa. Masakage joined his father and elder brother into exile following the defeat at 2nd Konodai (1564) and took up with the Satake clan. Masakage later became a retainer of Yûki Hideyasu and accompanied him to Echizen province in 1607. Despite his advanced years, Masakage attended the sieges of Osaka Castle on the Tokugawa side.
