A page from Bankoku kishô zufu (Illustrated Catalogue of National Flags), produced by Suzuki in 1851-1852 in connection with the increasing appearance of foreign ships in Japanese waters. Tokyo National Museum.
Suzuki Hanbei was a Mito han retainer who engaged in the translation of Western books, production of globes and maps, commissioning the construction of warships, and other such activities for lord of Mito Tokugawa Nariaki.
