In 1536, when the head of the Imagawa clan, Imagawa Ujiteru, died of illness, Imagawa Yoshimoto went to war against his older brother Genkô Etan for control of the clan. This succession dispute is known as the Hanagura no ran. With the military assistance of Hojo Ujitsuna of Sagami province, Yoshimoto is victorious over his older brother, and gains control of the clan.
