C. Andrew Gerstle is the leading scholar in the English-speaking world on Japanese traditional drama. He specializes particularly in the work of Chikamatsu Monzaemon and the kabuki and jôruri (puppet theatre) traditions of Kamigata (i.e. Kyoto and Osaka).

He is Professor of Japanese Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
