Chiba promoted a more spiritually minded art of sword fighting. This style used a straight bokken in kumitachi style training, which is considered the ancestor of the Shinai used in modern Kendo. Followers of this style held competitions in which the bokken was used against a person armed with a Naginata. Hokushin Itto Ryu dojo Genbukan was one of most popular dojo in Edo, Bakumatsu
