Machida Sanetsumi was the younger brother of Machida Hisanari, and accompanied his brother and 17 other young men from Satsuma han in sneaking out of the country in 1865 to study in Europe. He was 19 at the time. One of the other students was his 15-year-old younger brother, Machida Seijirô.
Sanetsumi returned to Japan the following year, in the 8th month.
