The ''Pembroke'' was an American merchant vessel which was fired upon by [[Choshu han|Chôshû domain]] warships in [[1863]].
The ''Pembroke'' was anchored at Tanoura (near the [[Straits of Shimonoseki]]) when, on 1863/5/10, the Chôshû domain warships [[Koshin|Kôshin]] and [[Kigai]] fired upon it. The ''Pembroke'' fled into the Bungo Channel.
US Resident Minister [[Robert H. Pruyn]] then tried on several occasions to negotiate for the [[Tokugawa shogunate]] to pay compensation.
