Fujiwara no Kintô was a [[Heian period]] [[kuge|courtier]] known for his compilations of poetry and for his role in designating canonical groups such as the "36 Poetry Immortals" (''[[Sanjurokkasen|Sanjûrokkasen]]''). Poetry collections compiled by Kintô include the ''Senzai wakashû'' and the ''[[Wakan roeishu|Wakan rôei shû]]''.
Kintô went through the [[Manyoshu|Man'yôshû]], [[Kokin wakashu|Kokin wakashû]], and [[Gosen wakashu|Gosen wakashû]] and selected thirty-six poets who he identified as the best. This list or grouping then became canonical, and remains an oft-cited standard grouping today.
