Gen-i was a Buddhist priest for Mt. Hiei who entered the service of the Oda sometime before 1570 and was named his deputy for Kyoto in 1582. After Nobunaga's death he served Hideyoshi and received a 50,000 koku fief at Takamai in Tamba province and was tasked with laying the groundwork for Fushimi castle in 1592. He was named one of the Five Bugyô (magistrates) by Hideyoshi before the latter's death.
